Blu Wine Tasting: MERF 2016 Chardonnay, Columbia Valley

Chardonnay is not my favorite white, but every wine I had tried so far at the Blu tasting was so delicious! My hopes were high as I went for my first swirl & sniff. My immediate reaction was to pucker my lips…TANNINS! I could tell this wine was very high in acidity due to the dry-mouth puckery feeling it gave me. I didn’t get much from the smell of the wine other than fruity. The description for it is:

The 2016 Chardonnay is smooth, rich and balanced. With flavors of fresh apple, pear and tropical fruit with the oak giving it a nice rich mouthfeel and hints of oak in the nose and finish.

After I re-read the description once I had taken a sip, I noticed more of the oak flavors from the wine. The sommelier explained to us that the wine was only around a $10 price point which is perfect for my college budget. I can confidently say that I will not be purchasing this wine on my own time because it’s just not my favorite. It was rather dry, and for white wines, I prefer something a teensy bit sweeter. I’ve mentioned before that I don’t love sweet wines, which is still true, but for a white, I prefer something on the medium sweet-medium dry scale.

As for the stats, this 2016 Chardonnay is from the Columbia Valley of Washington. Again, it goes for about $10-$15/bottle, depending on where you get it from. On most review sites, it gets about a 3.5/5 star rating. I would mostly agree with that rating, but I would even say it should get 3 stars instead of 3.5.

Until next wine time!
